Entitled 35-year-old keeps using neighbor's outdoor outlet without permission, spiking neighbor's electricity bill: 'I refuse to keep paying for his mini fridge!'

This guy had the audacity to call his neighbor's outdoor outlet a "shared" resource.

To be clear, the author of this story has his own porch. It's private. On one occasion, the 35-year-old dude next door named Greg asked if he could borrow his outdoor outlet in order to plug in his e-bike charger. The author granted him permission just that one time and would come to regret that decision in the coming months.

Now, Greg assumes the outlet is just as much his as it is anyone else's. He even put passive-aggressive sticky notes near the outlet, basically saying as much. He has used the outdoor outlet day in and day out for various items, including a mini fridge, a speaker, and a ring light. Imagine waking up every day and hearing some potential disturbance on your porch, only to discover that it's Greg again, needing to plug in his ring light to make a TikTok.

It's questionable why he's so obsessed with this outdoor outlet. Surely, he has outlets in his own home. Now, this author is dealing with a steeper electricity bill, all because of Greg's entitlement!

  • Of course, the author's electricity bill was $30 more that month. Yes, it wasn't a crazy expense for him to make, but he knew exactly who was the culprit. Besides, it's not about the bill so much as it's about the principle of the matter. If someone asks to use your outlet once and you permit them, that doesn't mean you've granted permission in perpetuity. Come on, Greg!

  • Maybe start there. Explain that you do not give him permission to use the outlet any longer due to the costs and the fact he is not asking each time he wishes to use it and isnt offering to cover the spike in your electric bill.

  • If he continues to use it after this conversation/letter, remove the socket and put a plain socket cover on. Or If the socket has its own breaker, turn it off and leave it off unless youre using it.
